REDWOOD CITY — A former Central County Fire Department chief has been convicted of 3 felonies stemming from what prosecutors say was an elaborate scheme that netted nearly $35,000 through the use of fraudulent credit cards at a fake business controlled by his wife.

Mark Steven Ladas, whose trial was scheduled to begin this week, pleaded no contest to grand theft, filing a false tax return and tax evasion on Mon stated San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe. He was initially charged with ten felonies.
